Google Tests Theft Detection Lock in Brazil
Google has commenced testing in Brazil of a theft detection feature for Android announced at Google I/O 2024 developers’ conference in May this year. Brazil was selected as the country to pilot the Theft Detection Lock due to the high prevalence of smartphone thefts, according to user feedback. As of now, residents of Brazil can sign up to participate in the pilot program.
How does Theft Detection Lock Work?
The Theft Detection Lock feature uses artificial intelligence to recognize unusual and sudden movements of the mobile device, indicative of a potential theft attempt. Other factors indicating theft could include attempts to use the phone on a different network or when the device remains inaccessible on a frequently used network for an extended period.
Enhancements to Privacy and Security on Android 15
This feature is part of broader privacy and security improvements for the Android 15 platform. These include a password-secured storage area known as a ‘Private Space’ for storing confidential applications and data. Gaining access to the ‘Private Space’ will require an additional layer of authentication. However, the Theft Detection Lock will also be accessible on older versions of Android via a Google Play services update.
Additional Features Under Test
Android users in Brazil are also testing the ability to send messages directly to businesses via WhatsApp by pressing a button that appears in the business search list. Other tests include scheduling appointments with doctors or cosmetologists using search results.
