YouTube Requires Labeling for Realistic Content Generated by AI

From Monday, March 18, authors uploading videos to YouTube will have to tag videos created using artificial intelligence. This action is part of Google’s plan to prevent misleading information reaching their users.

Content Tags Reveal Artificial Intelligence Use

Now, it has become necessary for those uploading videos onto YouTube to indicate whether the video features individuals doing things they did not do in reality, or depicts modified footage of real places or events, or displays bouts that never occurred. The explicit indication of this information helps users to better filter their information streams, a substantial portion of which are made using generative AI—often producing compelling texts, images, videos, and audio clips.

Labelling AI-Generated Content

If the user uploading a video indicates that it contains AI-generated content, YouTube will add a special label either as “altered or artificial content” or “sound or visual effects significantly altered or digitally generated“. Content created using the generative AI tools launched on YouTube in September will also be marked.

Exclusions and Penalties

According to YouTube, only realistic content that can mislead and convince users of its authenticity needs to be labeled. There is no requirement to label animations, color corrections, auto-generated scripts, subtitles and the like. Repeated violations will trigger penalties, including removal of the offending content and disconnection from the monetization program.
