In October of 2000 I ran into my local electronics store and stumbled on the iPAQ 3650. This device delivered it all! I could not believe what you received in this package. The iPaq 3650 sports a 206 MHz Intel StrongARM Processor, 32 MB of RAM, 16 MB of ROM, and a 12-bit (4096 colors) Thin-Film Transistor (TFT) Display. The iPAQ also had advanced multimedia capabilities in the form of MP3/WMA playback, voice recording and offline web browsing/email. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I became an iPAQ FREAK in days. Frantically I searched the internet looking for iPAQ news, information anything I get my hands on. Unfortunately I couldn’t find one web page that featured iPAQ’s. I couldn’t figure out why someone wouldn’t want to create an ALL-IN-ONE site for the iPAQ. So being the artsy person I am I started to design a layout for my newest venture a website. Weeks went by and I finished the layout and couldn’t figure out a name for the site. During dinner I was speaking with my wife and asked her, “What would you call it?” She said, “why don’t you just call it Dave’s Compaq iPAQ?” Here I was trying to find some fancy website name and my wife comes up with Daves Compaq iPAQ. It was a go! The first month live I couldn’t believe my eyes 10,000 visitors! I was amazed, 10,000 visitors without ANY advertising? I knew I was onto something since 10,000 visitors is no drop in the bucket!
![]() |
Over the next year my site grew gradually and I was continually adding features. By October 2001 my site reached 1,000,000 visitors within 1 year! We were named to PocketPC’s Magazine “Best Sites” an award I was extremely proud of. PocketPC Magazine was a source in which many PocketPC readers went to and to be awarded this was the ultimate award in its time for a PocketPC Evangelist. As I was recognized by PocketPC Magazine I was also approached in the possibility of having my site converted over to the PocketPC Magazine website. Hal Goldstein if you ever meet him is probably one of the nicest people in the PocketPC world you could meet. At the time both parties weren’t just ready for that. In July 2001, I was approached to write for the publication in which I was glad to accept.
On June 2002 I announced a partnership with Handango which enabled our community the option to shop for software and support the site. At the time Laura Rippy former CEO of Handango commented “Dave’s site caters to the Pocket PC fans,” said Laura Rippy, CEO of Handango. “Customers who visit Daves site for news, accessories, chat, and hardware bargains, can now shop for the best Pocket PC applications. We’re pleased to add Dave’s iPAQ to Handango’s set of one hundred channels for handheld and wireless software”.
On November 2002, I announced a partnership with Mobile Planet which was the first Mobile Planet branded store. By this partnership I was able to offer all of you the on stop shop experience in return the community would be supporting the site without getting bombarded with tons of pop up banners

Having several iPAQs, it is always a challenge to use whatever accessory I get on all of them. Not that I will use the accessory of each one, I just want to know that it works and that I can do it. I have 5 iPAQs and installed the BTVKB on four of them (4700, 2715, 1940, 5555). The only reason I didn’t try it on my 3970 was because my wife is in California and took it with her. I did find that switching between devices meant a little extra work. For some reason, I had to delete the pairing and then redo it. The chances of me switching between my iPAQs frequently are slim, so having to redo the pairing is not a big deal. What is a big deal is that it worked on my devices and it was superior in performance.
I did find the need for a stand while entering text. I tried leaning my iPAQ against a book but it just wasn’t the perfect situation. SO I decided to take a trip to my local Gift Store to see if they had any stands. They did, it was absolutely perfect, and it only cost $2.00 so I bought two; one for my desk and the other to keep in my SCOTTeVEST. It is adjustable and will fold flat for transportation.
I have had the opportunity to work with a lot of different devices and accessories for them. By far, this one is about the “coolest” accessory that I have ever used with my iPAQ. Besides being very small, functional and clearly complementary to my iPAQ, it is just a real neat “toy” to have. Without the slightest hesitation, I give the BTVKB my highest recommendation.

Agilent Technologies Inc. introduced two side-firing, tricolor surface-mount LEDs (light-emitting diodes) that permit handset and PDA designers to mix separate red, green and blue light sources in any combination. The devices are intended primarily for backlighting and status indicators in handheld devices, such as mobile phones and PDAs.
In the Agilent HSMF-C113 and HSMF-C115 side-firing ChipLED devices, the package is mounted vertically, with the light emitted through a lens on the side rather than the top of the package. This simplifies the coupling of the light to a light pipe for backlighting mobile phone and PDA keypads and LCD screens.
In handsets and other handheld devices, separate colors can indicate incoming SMS (short messaging system) messages, e-mail and stock news. They can even identify different callers. The availability of an unlimited range of illumination colors provides a new degree of design flexibility in many other applications, such as backlighting and status indication in office and industrial equipment and home appliances.
“Our new side-firing, tricolor LEDs give manufacturers more backlighting color options in an ultraminiature package,” said Cheng Kai Chong, worldwide marketing manager for the Optoelectronic Products Division in Agilent’s Semiconductor Products Group. “They also enable status indicators to display any color desired for executing different tasks. These new devices add to Agilent’s extensive product portfolio, giving customers a one-stop-shop solution for their illumination requirements.”
The HSMF-C113 and HSMF-C115 side-firing tricolor chip-type LEDs feature a four-terminal common anode connection and are housed in Agilent’s miniature 2.5 mm (L) x 1.0 mm (W) x 1.0 mm (H) package — among the industry’s smallest. Precision manufacturing techniques ensure perfect pick-up by automated manufacturing equipment.
The Agilent HSMF-C113 combines InGaN blue (470 nm dominant wavelength, 60 mcd typical brightness); AlInGaP green (572 nm, 50 mcd); and AlInGaP red (626 nm, 80 mcd) die. All brightnesses measure at 20 mA operating current. The premium HSMF-C115 uses brighter InGaN green, with 525 nm dominant wavelength and 170-mcd typical brightness. Both versions have diffused optics, are compatible with IR (infrared) reflow soldering processes, and are certified lead-free. Agilent’s ChipLED package features high thermal-dissipation capability for maximum reliability.
Pricing and Availability
The Agilent HSMF-C113 is priced at $0.58 each, and the HSMF-C115 at $1.00 each, both in 1,000-piece quantities. These ChipLED devices are available now through Agilent’s direct sales channel and worldwide distribution partners. The ChipLED devices are shipped with EIA481-compliant standard packaging: 8 mm carrier tape on 7-inch diameter reel and sealed in moisture barrier bags.
Further information on Agilent’s single, bicolor and tricolor LED products is available here at Agilent Technologies.

If you leave the adapter on when you press the power button (which does not really shut down the device, it just puts it in a kind of sleep mode), then the device will still be on when you press the power button again (to wake the unit up). __________________ Elrendhel Moderator & Product Reviewer, Dave’s iPAQ -= Dave’s iPAQ is not affiliated with HP =- Members Only FAQ Section . INTRODUCTION:
After installing this program, most users will realize just how powerful their wirelessly equipped iPAQs are; well above the standard established by Microsoft’s “Zero Configuration Networking”, the iPAQ will become a portable WiFi Scanner and hotspot detector (Hotspotter). Additionally, the program makes a great troubleshooting utility for WiFi related problems. By my calculations, Microsoft’s ZC Networking only sees about 4 out of 10 WLANs (or 40% of the actual networks available) in a test area here in my hometown. After having loaded PocketWinC, I was able to see all 10 WLANs. This was confirmed by double-checking with another Laptops with scanner software loaded.
As suggested earlier, I find the program to be a great help in sectionalizing and isolating connectivity problems on WiFi networks. Accordingly, you will see me tout this product repeatedly in the “Wireless WiFi Problems” Forum here at Dave’s iPAQ.
OVERVIEW:
![]() |
PocketWinc (currently on Version 2.0, build 986), like many other PocketPC software packages, is designed to be downloaded for a limited “Trial” basis. The FREE trial period is limited to 30 days. During this trial period, the program is not limited or crippled in any way. I highly recommend that everyone who is even remotely interested in spotting their local hotspots or need a utility to assist them in diagnosing WiFi problems should download PocketWinc and try it for themselves. You pretty much have to see for yourself in order to see just how incredible this program truly is. And, if you like the PocketPC version, you can rejoice that they also offer a regular PC version- great for laptop users who want to find hotspots. PocketWinc integrates with their Flagship application “AirPatrol Enterprise” for designing and managing your corporate Wireless LAN, although the AirPatrol series is meant for larger corporations and is priced accordingly.
The program’s installer package size is only 3124K and the download speed across broadband was substantially less than a minute. Once installed on the PC, the program will install on the iPAQ via the next ActiveSync session. The initial load time is about three seconds, and installs an icon (the standardized “Wireless” icon) on the top taskbar (the snapshot above shows a balloon dialog pointing to it). On all subsequent uses (between resets), the load time is instantaneous, although it is done in two-steps. As shown on the screenshot to the right, when the user clicks on the Radio icon on the top taskbar, the first step produces a small window with some basic information about the current connection, and offers two choices: proceed to the Full Screen via the PocketWinc link, or Hide this balloon dialog box.

ABOUT

Brief information about VKB Inc.
I have kept all the settings at the default level because I find that they have been perfect for me. I did test each and found that the adjustments were distinctly noticeable. User preference will determine what settings to use. The only complaint I have is the battery monitor. It is not as good as I would have liked. It does not adjust to the actual remaining power very well.
So how does this device work? The template is projected onto your desktop through a holographic optical element with a red diode laser. At the same time, there is an infrared plane of light that is transmitted across the surface of your desktop. You cannot see this light (however, I was able to capture an image of it emitting light using a night vision camera) but it lies just above your desktop by a few millimeters. When you touch a key that is part of the holographic image, the light is reflected from to the sensor module.
The reflected light passes through an infrared filter and is imaged on to a CMOS image sensor in the sensor module. The sensor chip then determines from what location the reflected light came from. The chip has the ability to track multiple keystrokes at the same time thus allowing for keystrokes like CTRL-Fn number key. It makes a lot of sense to me how it works but I can’t imagine the time it took to develop this. Frankly, the only thing I care about is that it works well!
Certainly, there are a lot of uses for a device like this. Of course, our main interest is on the iPAQ but all of us have multiple devices so it would be nice to use the BTVKB with them too — and you can! You can use the BTVKB with your iPAQ, cell phone, portable computers, Tablet PCs, and Laptops.
As for industry, I can see very clear uses in test environments, hospitals (especially in a surgical operating room), “Clean Rooms”, or any room that needed a sterile environment. Certainly, one could see this used in places where darkness would prohibit the ability to see a regular keyboard.

Microsoft Corp. announced it is extending Microsoft® Office Live Communications Server 2005 capabilities to mobile devices, enabling companies to deploy trusted instant messaging ( IM ) and presence-enabled solutions that provide a consistent experience across PCs and smart mobile devices. As an initial step, the company unveiled plans to deliver a new mobile Live Communications Server 2005 client, for Windows Mobile ( TM ) -based devices.
Based on the user interface of the Microsoft Office Communicator 2005 messaging client, the new Windows Mobile client is designed to provide information workers with a premier mobile collaboration experience through native integration of mobile applications with enterprise-grade, real-time communications tools. Extending Live Communications Server to mobile devices furthers Microsoft’s vision for integrated communications, described by Bill Gates at the Microsoft RTC unified launch event March 8 as giving information workers access to presence and unified modes of communication — e-mail, phone, instant messaging ( IM ), short message service ( SMS ), videoconferencing and webconferencing — across a variety of form factors ( PC, desk phone, mobile device ) and wired or wireless networks.
“Information workers spend a lot of time away from their desks for meetings, travel, customer visits and other demands, and having mobile access to enterprise-grade real-time communications can help them work smarter and more efficiently,” said Gurdeep Pall, corporate vice president for the Real-Time Collaboration Group at Microsoft. “Through the new Windows Mobile client and innovative mobile solutions from a vibrant ecosystem of developer partners, we’ll offer mobile users an integrated communications and presence-sharing experience, all within a security-enhanced, trusted environment.”
For Mobile Workers and Business Customers With beta availability expected in the second half of 2005, the Windows Mobile client will be a premier mobile solution combining the integrated benefits of Windows Mobile and Live Communications Server 2005 and the look and feel of the recently announced Microsoft Office Communicator 2005. It will extend the power of real-time collaboration to Windows Mobile-based devices offered today by 40 device-makers and 67 mobile operators in 48 countries. Businesses running Live Communications Server 2005 and the new Windows Mobile client will have a more secure and robust way to give mobile workers access to integrated Microsoft Office real-time communications tools, such as those that allow them to share rich presence information, make use of multiple modes of real-time communication from one centralized console, and set their own controls on how communications are routed based on their personal preferences.
The new Windows Mobile client with Live Communications Server 2005 will enable a number of new benefits for mobile workers, including the following:
Access while on the go. The Windows Mobile client will give employees access to their corporate IM system and presence-sharing capabilities on a wide variety of Windows Mobile-powered devices operating on all types of wireless networks supported by Windows Mobile devices — including Wi-Fi, GSM and CDMA — making it easier for them to complete important tasks without a VPN connection.
Real-time access to key contacts. The new Windows Mobile client running with Live Communications Server 2005 will help employees stay in touch with key colleagues, partners and customers while in the field to handle time-sensitive requests and make decisions faster. Familiar experience. The Windows Mobile client will deliver remote access to presence and real-time communications tools via a familiar, easy-to-use user interface that is consistent with the Live Communications Server and Microsoft Office Communicator 2005 desktop experience. For Mobile Developers
The Windows Mobile client is a prime example of the rich mobile solutions that developers can build to run with the award-winning Live Communications Server 2005 using the full-featured client and server application programming interfaces ( APIs ) that span the platform as well as standards-based protocol-level integration via SIP, SIMPLE and CSTA over SIP. Microsoft is expanding its Technology Adopter Program ( TAP ) for Live Communications Server to include mobile developers and creating new opportunities for developers through the following:
A new API for Windows Mobile developers. The Windows Mobile client will deliver a new API that will enable the more than 380,000 active Windows Mobile developers worldwide to take advantage of the rich communications capabilities of Live Communications Server in their mobile applications. Network integration with Live Communications Server. Microsoft is driving continuous integration efforts with network equipment vendors that will make emerging wireless network capabilities available to Live Communications Server users and will pave the way for solutions that enable concurrent mobile Live Communications Server connectivity while roaming across LAN, Wi-Fi and mobile networks.
