Hi, I know I was being a tad sarcastic earlier (just my warped UK sense of humour – sorry!!) but on a serious note – because you’ve changed the thread on the forum – the link to the “giveaway thread” in the competition rules is now not valid.

Just thought I’d point this out.

Microsoft Voice Command 1.5 changes?

Hi all, Does anyone know what the changes are in Microsoft Voice Command 1.5? Anything interesting for us iPaq 6315 users? Thx,

I couldn’t install it. The first error message said something along the lines of “A previous version of Voice Command was found on this device. Please uninstall it and try again. So I uninstalled v. 1.1 and tried again. The second message was: “No previous version of Microsoft Voice Command US PPC 1.50 was not found on this machine. The setup cannot continue.”

Pretty funny catch 22 there, double negative and all.

I got the same error when I did it. I was under the assumption that it should work with the 6315.

I can’t see any new features of Microsoft Voice command 1.5 from its previous version but I doubt that now it supports the ipaq phone h6300 series. And this software works well with my h6365. (Ratings: 10 out of 10).

I did get it installed and it works very good. I especially like the ability to just say call and the name and it will dial the phone. This is great feature while driving.

I thought my install problem was that I had installed 1.01 from my home pc and was trying to upgrade to 1.5 from my office pc. So I reinstalled 1.01 from my office pc, and then tried the upgrade. I got the same error message. I then called the non-toll free Microsoft support number printed in the manual, and after 15 pleasant minutes on the phone with Vish she told me that primary support for Microsoft Voice Command is by the hardware manufacturer. Microsoft only offered two options, first through the web page, and second a call back from Microsoft at a charge of $35. I expressed some surprise, and she confirmed this through her supervisor. I don’t find 1.01 works very well and I thought 1.5 would improve things.

Hazarry, I’m not sure I follow your message. You doubt that Voice Command now supports the ipaq phone h6300 series?

Thanks, that worked. I unstalled Activesync, uninstalled Voice Command on both devices, did a hard reset of the 6315. Then I installed Activesync 3.8 (which worked, although it hung for a long time at 92%) and synched. Then I installed Voice Command 1.01 on the PC (without synching), then installed 1.5 over it, and then synched. At that point it installed and seems to be working much better than 1.01. I noticed it has AGC instructions for the 6315 now (setting 2).

Actually, I had to do all that a couple of times, because you can’t install 1.5 without 1.01 being installed on the PC, and you can’t install 1.5 after 1.01 has been installed on the 6315. That is certainly counterintuitive for an upgrade.

Phone status is new from 1.01

The whole Phone Status section is new from version 1.01… It includes pretty cool stuff: Phone Status You can set the ring volume and configure flight mode plus learn the battery level, signal strength, date and time using voice commands. Say What time is it? to hear the current time. What date is it? to hear the current date. What is my battery level? to hear the current battery level. Turn flight mode on to turn on flight mode and disable all wireless radios including Bluetooth, WIFI and cellular phone. Turn flight mode off to turn off flight mode and restore the previous state of all wireless radios including Bluetooth, WIFI and cellular phone. The following require a Pocket PC Phone Edition or Smartphone What is my signal strength? to hear the current state of the phone on the network. What calls have I missed? What missed calls do I have? to hear each missed call and reset the missed call count. Set Ringer High Set Ringer Loud to set ringer volume to 5 Set Ringer Medium Set Ringer Middle to set ringer volume to 3 Set Ringer Low Set Ringer Soft to set ringer volume to 1 Set Ringer Quiet Set Ringer Off Set Ringer Mute to set ringer volume to off Set Ringer Vibrate to set ringer to vibrate

Mmmmm….beer.

These are neat things. It responded fine to “turn flight mode on” but when I tried “turn flight mode off”, it started *all* the radios, not just the GPRS radio that I had on. So I’m not sure about “restore the previous state”. Does it work that way for you?

You all have sparked interest in this program…but where is the voice command located? Its not in my programs, so I assume its part of the install cd and I neglected to load it. Am I assuming correctly?

Voice Command is an add-on product from Microsoft. It is not included with any 63xx model.

I just installed Microsoft Voice Command 1.5, and the BEST thing that I’ve discovered that nobody has mentioned is that they fixed the problem where you had to delay saying a response for about 1 second. It would always screw up for me when it would say “CALL JOHN DOE AT HOME?” and I’d immediately say “CORRECT”, then nothing would happen. This is fixed in 1.5. THANK YOU MICROSOFT!

VoiceCommand 1.5 and 6315 – screen never comes on.

I still get a lock-up (or something similar) on my 6315 after using voicecommand 1.5. When I press the on button after the PPC turns itself off after using VC or if I turn the PPC off, the 6315 appears as if it is turning on (the bluetooth light starts to blink) but the screen never wakes up. Pressing the on button again does not appear to turn the unit off as the bluetooth light still blinks. This may be a conflict with other software, but I seem to remember seeing others report this problem a while back with version 1.01. I never found a solution, obviously, but maybe someone here knows of a workaround?

VC 1.5 was actually optimized for the 6315. It used to be that the mic would take up to 800 ms to open and start sampling audio data. That is no longer a problem on the 6315 and you should be able to talk the moment that you see the microphone icon.

What to do with that old iPAQ!

Most of the seven million Americans who upgrade to a new PDA every year simply throw their used one away or put it in a drawer not knowing what to do with it. Skyscape and SATELLIFE are creating a “Global Supply Line” that will eliminate this waste and put old handheld devices to good use–by donating them to physicians in Africa. Skyscape will equip these handheld devices with mobile medical references enabling health practitioners in the developing world to access the latest medical information while working in rural areas. This program begins December 1, 2004 (World AIDS Day).

“Like cell phones, PDA turnover is high as new models are introduced. This holiday season many PDAs will be retired, but these can be put to good use: helping doctors in developing nations provide better healthcare,” said Sandeep Shah, CEO of Skyscape. “For more than a decade we have been developing different ways by which mobile medicine can improve healthcare. Now teaming with SATELLIFE, Skyscape is bringing these benefits to the farthest corners of the world.”

Anyone wishing to donate their used PDA should visit, www.skyscape.com/AIDSDAY for more information.

Skyscape will equip the donated devices with a suite of integrated titles–including Griffith’s 5-Minute Clinical Consult, Johns Hopkins Hospital 2002 Guide to Medical Care of Patients with HIV Infection, Harrison’s Manual of Medicine and A to Z Drugs. These references offer detailed coverage of information that is critical for the treatment of AIDS patients.

SATELLIFE will distribute the PDAs to doctors in Uganda and other East African countries as part of its existing initiative to fight the spread of AIDS in Africa and improve medical care by providing doctors the most current treatment guidelines and references.

Making a Difference

“Outside of a few select hospitals, most doctors in Sub-Saharan Africa do not have access to the latest medical information – which is essential for providing the highest quality of medical care,” said Holly Ladd, executive director, SATELLIFE. “By providing doctors with the references they need on handheld devices, we can ensure they get out to the clinics and rural areas where they can have the most significant impact.”

Physicians in Uganda frequently travel half a day to treat a patient in rural areas. They cannot bring what few references they own with them, which means if it is not a simple issue, patients may not receive the proper treatment for days. With a PDA, physicians can stay at the patient’s bedside, check for available drugs to treat the condition, and treat the patient immediately.

The donated PDAs will be tested and shipped to Africa within a month, enabling the donation to have an immediate impact. SATELLIFE is working with the Makerere University in Uganda, a center for excellence in the research and treatment of AIDS and other clinics in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa. SATELLIFE will also handle the distribution of the devices and the training of the health practitioners who receive them.

Dr. Patrick Okello, Kampala, Uganda, who participated in an earlier program said, “The best gift you have given me is the PDA. Everything I need in my practice is here!”

The goal is to provide PDAs for at least 400 doctors, making it the largest donation program of its kind.

About SATELLIFE

For the past 15 years SATELLIFE, which was founded by Nobel Prize winning cardiologist Dr. Bernard Lown, has been a global leader in delivering health information to the world’s poorest countries. More than 20,000 health professionals in 150 countries, including doctors, nurses, medical students, researchers, government officials, and program managers, access SATELLIFE’s vital networks everyday.

Ghost in the machine?

Hi, Something very strange is happening with my RX3115. It turns on from the blue… and it spends a lot of battery because of that. I checked all messages in this forum and noticed one that tells to turn off the e-mails checking. Well..I did it and the ghost is still there. As a remark: I use CommonTime´s mNotes to syncronize with our Lotus Notes server. BTW: Very good for Notes users. Ideas??? TIA, Sérgio Mafra

I’ve noticed that my 3955 always turns on at Midnight. My suggestion is to set the power off time (under Settings/Power) to 1 or 2 minutes. That worked for me. The iPAQ still turns on but stays on for only a short time thus saving power.

disappearing calendar AND notes

I’m using a 4155 and generally having a good experience. What about the disappearing calendar though?

I know that active sync defaults to a 2 week period, but where do the notes go to that accompany IPAQ calendar? The calendar itself gets archived into outlook but the notes that I make to accompany each appointment have vanished

thanks

Chris

Welcome to Dave’s Ipaq. I have to say that I hadn’t noticed if my notes disappear – I presume you mean from the archive calendar in OUTLOOK. I have just been thru mine, but I can’t remember if I have any appts with notes. I shall test it out and see….

Regards,
